Packaging and Sustainability

Committed to sustainability and concerned about our ecosystem’s carbon footprint, we contribute to the preservation of the environment by installing the latest technology in our machines to reduce energy consumption and film waste, and actively engage in recyclable packaging solutions.

Flexible packaging outperforms most other packaging formats from a sustainability point of view.

Our Circular Strategy.

With this in mind, we ensure our machines are equipped with the latest eco technology. Also, our commitment to the environment involves recycling. We proudly offer recyclable packaging solutions:

Recyclability of plastic packaging has increasingly become a central point of discussion in the industry. Bossar has invested the past two years developing recyclable solutions for pouches with its partner, Scholle IPN. This involved combining mono-material film structures with recyclable components. The accomplishment of such a difficult task is due to the outstanding capability of the BMS machines to adjust the crucial parameters of temperature, time, and pressure, allowing for an excellent seal quality for the recyclable pouches.

How We Minimize Our Impact on the Environment.

Compared to rigid packaging, flexible material offers excellent sustainability benefits, through its lightness, flexibility, and more efficient use of resources.

Reduce

What is source reduction?

Source reduction is the prevention of waste due to the use of less material.
• Flexible packaging provides excellent source reduction as less material is required to package products than would ordinarily be used in a rigid container.
• Due to the source reduction provided by flexible packaging, it also provides an improved product-to-package ratio.

total material weight

What is Total Material Weight?

Total material weight is the weight, in grams, of the total package. For flexible packaging, this includes the bag or pouch, fitment, and typically the outer corrugate box. For rigid packaging, this includes the container itself, any applicable closures, as well as any corrugate trays and outer overwraps.
• Since flexible packaging provides excellent source reduction, this results in a lower total material weight as compared to most rigid packages.

energy

What is Total Energy?

Total energy is the energy, in megajoules, required to manufacture the package.
• Flexible packaging typically requires less energy in production as it uses less material to make the final package as compared to a rigid package.

greenhouse-gas

What is Process Greenhouse Gas?

Process greenhouse gas is the additional carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that are created in the production of the package.
• Since flexible packaging typically uses less material, has a lower total material weight, and requires less energy in production, it tends to create a lesser amount of process greenhouse gas than a rigid package.

post consumer waste

What is Post-Consumer Solid Waste?

Post-consumer solid waste is the portion of the package that goes to the landfill because it cannot be reused or recycled.
• The majority of the volume of the flexible package comes from corrugate, which is highly recyclable, resulting in a decreased amount of post-consumer solid waste. The flexible bag or pouch itself uses less material and therefore has a lower total material weight, so it inherently creates less post-consumer solid waste.

Partnership for Sustainability.

Further, by partnering with industry-leading companies such as Dow Chemical, Bossar and Scholle IPN are  investing intensively to achieve a shared objective: delivering recyclable material for sustainably-designed pouch packaging solutions. This joint operation consists of reciprocally sharing knowledge and accurate expertise in each specific segment of the chain, in order to promote and accelerate the process, and anticipate market requirements.

By analyzing the mechanical properties of our machines, understanding the film barrier properties, and the behaviour of the materials during the welding process, we developed new polyolefin-based recyclable plastic packaging structures. Adapting our HFFS machines to these new structures, and studying and improving the sealing process of pouches, especially with polyolefin-based spouts, is a perfect example how total packaging solutions not only guarantee the best OEE of machinery, the lowest total cost of ownership of the packaging unit, but also enable customers to develop and choose recyclable plastic packaging solutions, and therefore committing to a circular economy. Moreover, this beneficial cooperation has also led to the development of new pouch sealing technologies for different recyclable structures with and without gas and odour barrier, surface printed or laminated, which will soon be available for customers.

Furthermore, waste from our industrial activities is recycled through official registered specialized companies.

Bossar Machines and the Circular Economy.
